Match Details

South Africa vs Sri Lanka, 1st T20I

Sri Lanka tour of South Africa, 2019

Newlands, Cape Town

Mar 19, 06:00 PM LOCAL

Pitch Profile & Stats

Newlands is one of the few grounds in South Africa that assists spin bowlers borne out by the fact that many of South African spinners have come from the Western Cape. The pitch is also very conducive to results with a small percentage of Tests played ending up as drawn.

The Newlands pitch can provide some mean bounce for fast bowlers, but is also expected to assist the spinners with some turn later on in the match. As the records suggest, sides that choose to bat first do better in Cape Town than those who chase.

Match Overview

South Africa got past the humiliation of losing the Test series to Sri Lanka by beating them fair and square in the ODI series. The hosts were completely dominant, refusing to give the Lankans an inch, and ended up completing the 5-0 whitewash. Quinton de Kock was voted as the man of the series for his tremendously consistent performances.

It goes without saying that Sri Lanka have a lot to do if they hope to get back on level terms in the T20I series. Their top order has consistently underperformed in the limited overs matches so far, and the general team morale looks low too.

Fantasy Tips

  • Quinton de Kock was voted the man of the series for the ODIs, having scored quick runs in nearly every match. The South African wicketkeeper-batsman is playing at a very high level right now, and is a must-pick.

  • Avishka Fernando had his scoring exploits cut off in the ODI series as he put in a string of disappointing performances. He will be looking at the T20I series to convince the selectors of his importance to the Lankan lineup at the World Cup.
  • Faf du Plessis was the second best South African batsman throughout the ODI series after De Kock. The Proteas skipper will not be a part of the squad for the last two T20Is, and will be eager to sign off on a good note.
  • Rassie van der Dussen from South Africa will be in the dream11 side.

  • Dhananjaya de Silva wasn’t able to change the course of the last ODI, either with the bat or the ball. The T20I series will provide him with a new opportunity to make his mark and influence the proceedings.
  • Thisara Perera is another excellent all-rounder in the Lankan outfit who did not have as great an ODI series as he would’ve liked. But that doesn’t change the fact that he has the ability to decide games all on his own.
  • Jean-Paul Duminy has been one of the best all-rounder in the sport over the last decade, and he recently returned to the Proteas side after a long absence. Duminy will be the skipper in the second and third T20Is once Du Plessis leaves.

  • Lasith Malinga picked up the important wicket of De Kock in the fifth ODI. Despite his age, the Lankan skipper will be desperate to show everyone why he has been one of the best bowlers in the world over the last 10 years, and that he could still be a threat in the upcoming World Cup.
  • Imran Tahir was outstanding in the ODI series, ably complementing the pacy and lethal South African seam unit. Tahir displayed his turn and unpredictability and picked up important wickets along the way.
  • Kagiso Rabada will depart after the first T20I along with Imran Tahir, Du Plessis, De Kock and L Ngidi. He will be keen to produce another great performance in a series where he has impressed already. He will be well supported by Lungi Ngidi.

Players to Watch out

A polished all-rounder, Duminy is more than capable of carrying out that role; he will want to use the first T20I as a platform to cement his authority in the side.
