Sri Lanka Women vs England Women, 2nd ODI

England Women tour of Sri Lanka, 2019

Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium, Hambantota

Mar 18, 09:50 AM LOCAL

Pitch Profile & Stats

The MRIC hosted its first ODI in 2011, but its remote location has meant that it has hosted just 20 ODIs and 7 T20Is till date. The surface is generally good for batting, with the average first innings score at the venue being 249 in the 50-over format.

Unlike the traditional Sri Lankan surfaces, the MRIC offers more assistance to the pace bowlers in comparison to the spinners. The seamers can expect an added advantage with overcast conditions expected on matchday.

Match Overview

Sri Lankan Women are fighting hard against the England women’s team in their 1st ODI match running at Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium, Hambantota. Having to opt field first, Sri Lankan bowlers were seen struggling in front of English Batters. With the help of AE Jones (79), HC Knight (61), NR Sciver (93), and DN Wyatt(47), English women were able to record mammoth 331runs with the loss of 7 wickets.

Just like their Bowlers, Sri Lankan’s batters were not able to impress much and were seven wickets down in only 46 runs. Currently, Sri Lanka’s women are 127/7, until the rains affected the play. KH Brunt of England took three wickets and gave just 24 runs in 7 overs.

The difference in class between the two sides is quite evident, and it will be a big surprise if the visitors do not wrap up the series on Monday before the third and final ODI at Katunayake.

Team News

en-w

  • After a near-perfect display in the series opener, England is unlikely to make any changes to their playing XI for the second ODI.
  • The only spot they would deliberate upon would be whether to bring in Georgia Elwiss for Laura Marsh, but that is unlikely to happen.

sl-w

  • This side might do some changes after a poor performance in the first ODI.

Fantasy Tips

Wicket-Keeper

  • Amy Jones has had a splendid time in Sri Lanka thus far, scoring 56 in the warm-up fixture and following it up with a knock of 79 in the 1st ODI before she getting run out.
  • Opening the innings for England, the 25-year-old is in good shape to continue her good form and perhaps get to her first ODI hundred.

Batsmen

  • With an average of above 40 in ODI cricket, Tammy Beaumont is one of England’s finest players. Like Jones, opening the batting gives her a good opportunity to get some runs under her belt, be it batting first or second.
  • Danielle Wyatt is another player from the visiting side to bank on, as she has been in good touch of late. She scored 47 runs off just 26 balls in the series opener before she was run out.
  • 20-year-old Harshitha Madavi, who scored a half-century in the warm-up fixture, seems to be a player with plenty of promise.
  • Nilakshi de Silva, who played a mature knock of 45 in the 1st ODI, could be promoted higher up the batting order and is worth selecting in the squad.

All-Rounders

  • There are tough choices here, Sciver, Knight and Atapattu all three are good options. So choose according to your team combination.

Bowlers

  • The ever-consistent England trio of Katherine Brunt, Anya Shrubsole and Kate Cross impressed in the 1st ODI, and are worthy selections.
  • Oshadi Ranasinghe who, apart from picking two wickets in the 1st ODI, delivered with the bat as well, scoring an unbeaten half-century.

Players to Watch out

England skipper Heather Knight had a not-so-impressive tour of India by her lofty standards, and the 28-year-old will be keen to make amends on this tour of Sri Lanka.
